Chef Yu
About This Spot
Stepping into Chef Yu feels like discovering a spacious, unhurried corner of New York where genuine flavor and easy company blend effortlessly. Located on 8th Avenue just shy of the city's constant bustle, it welcomes you with ample breathing room—a thoughtful layout that invites shared meals without the noise or rush often found in bigger city spots.
The atmosphere here carries a casual warmth. Whether you find yourself at an intimate table upstairs or sharing a family-style spread downstairs, there’s a feeling of connection that naturally settles in. The mood isn’t loud or flashy but quietly warm, embracing the hum of conversation and the soft clatter of lantern-lit plates moving around the table.
At its heart, Chef Yu is a place to savor the textures and spices of Chinese cuisine in a setting where the menu comes alive through human moments. Expect to spin the lazy Susan to explore deeply savory, sometimes spicy bites—from tender slices of chicken steeped in Hunan-style sauces to dumplings dressed in aromatic chili oil that invite dipping and shared smiles. Drinks flow alongside—whether a carefully crafted cocktail or an ice-cold beer—to pace the evening as you reconnect with friends and family. The bar adds a laid-back layer to the experience, pairing familiar flavors with affordable, well-crafted drinks that bring an unpretentious joy to the table.
This is the kind of place that’s quietly endured through the city’s shifts and steady rhythms, carrying with it a comforting steadiness. Its genuine hospitality resonates in the friendly, attentive service, which comes with a sense of being seen and valued—not rushed. It’s a spot where moments are savored at the perfect tempo: slow enough to linger over conversation, quick enough to keep hunger and laughter well in balance.
Chef Yu feels less like a restaurant and more like a well-loved gathering spot where the food, space, and company come together with a subtle pulse of life that makes you want to return—not for spectacle, but for the simple pleasure of belonging.

First thing I noticed when I walked into the restaurant was how spacious it was. The tables are spaced out nicely and allowed for adequate room for each guest at the table. This restaurant serves food family style so everyone at the table had a fun experience spinning the center piece of the table to try a little of every dish. My personal favorites were the szechuan oil wontons and spicy diced chicken. The flavors of both of these dishes were on another level! They had depth and were very delicious. The flavors of the all of the food were authentic and delicious! Definitely one of my favorite chinese food spots in the city now and the lemon sorbet dessert was the perfect balance of refreshing and sour to end off the meal. Overall great experience fast and attentive service and I will definitely be coming back!

Outstanding food! We ordered Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and Sliced Chicken and Broccoli to share. They were delicious. Rich flavour on the soup and chicken was tender and broccoli was cooked perfectly! Service was friendly and fast. Cheap booze too

Stopped in and had an amazing lunch here with some friends. It wasn’t too busy, very nice environment, everyone is very friendly, staff is quick and can be a bit pushy but to as bad as some places I have been to. The Brunch drinks are worth it and the food wow, it was amazing. Overall I would say please stop by and enjoy. This place has been here through a lot and before the pandemic it was very hard to even get in the door. When you come you will understand why.

The ambience of this restaurant is very nice and the service is great. There are two levels offering various seating options including a large, private dining area on the second floor. The menu is extensive and they have a full bar. I enjoyed my meal (spring rolls and chicken with cashews) and drink (an old-fashioned) but I have to say that the quality of the food didn't match the vibe of the restaurant as a whole which surprised me. It was tasty, fresh, very hot and left me satisfied, but I was expecting something with bigger pieces of chicken or large roasted cashews, a more exciting sauce, etc. I would eat here again and hopefully I'll get the 'wow' factor next time.

The food was delicious and quite a good price for the location. The dumplings in chili oil were fantastic, although not spicy at all. The chow fun with pork was perfectly cooked - the pork was tender the bok choy was still crispy, but it also lacked any spice. The happy hour cocktails were solid and for $8, the Manhattan was as good as any $17 Manhattan anywhere in the city. The place was quiet and comfortable.

Chef Yu is among my favorite quick order online, pick up, then back at my desk fast options. My favorite is the Chicken/Pineapple fried rice with cashews. Chef Yu gives huge portions of this for a very fair price.

The food was ok , I gave less stars because the scallion pancakes were very oily . We ordered calamari and it was ok . The main courses weren’t too hot but still was ok . We liked that the waiters were nice and the restaurant was very quiet which was perfect for our meeting so I’d recommend this place for people who need to discuss something.
